Dell extends it’s linux support

March 31, 2007

After two surveys about linux usage in private homes and offices dell has decided to take their gnu/linux support to a new level. In a blog entry of dell they promise to make efforts to get free drivers for all hardware parts of their systems.

They acknowledge the importance of this drivers in the main kernel and want to support the community.

If they held their promises I will look forward to recommend Dell computers.. especially if they sell gnu/linux certified or gnu/linux pre-installed pc’s.

Saturdays link list #3

March 24, 2007

With no introduction, here is the saturday link list..

Heise has hosted a discussion about Open Source with various topics from the open source yearbook 2007 to the issue of open source vs. free software. They have videos which are waiting to be downloaded.

LinuxFormat has an interview with Ian Murdock (who switched to Sun Microsystems recently) talking about Debian und what to learn from ubuntu.

Martin Michlmayr has studied 6 projects (debian, gcc, plone, openoffice.org, gnome, linux kernel and x.org) regarding their problems with release scheduling. He points out their specific problems and how they have solved or how they want to solve them. Now he published his findings in an article on his blog.

Saturdays link list #2

March 17, 2007

There is my second saturday link list, which is only the second one. But nevertheless is a tradition on my blog *g*

The Road to KDE 4: Amarok 2 Development is Underway is about how Amarok 2 is evolving. It’s about the new platforms MacOS and Windows and how the GUI will look like in the future.

Dell has started a linux survey to gather information about what user are expecting from them. Please take that survey (2 minutes) to show Dell how important linux support is for you.

LinuxJournal has an article about the soon death of web radio in the U.S.A. The legislation has created a law which forces the web radio projects to pay a fee for every performance of a song (one performance is one song listened by one user, that means 3 songs listened by 1000 users are 3.000 performances). AOL would have to pay 20 Mio. Dollars a year, but also the small projects are doomed.

The Austrian Open Source Contest 2007 has created a blog to discuss ideas about projects. For more infos read the earlier blog entry.

New TFT display…

March 16, 2007

My three year old (Targe Visionary) TFt display died two days after I got my new computer. After some research on geizhals I decided to take either the HP w22 or the Samsung SyncMaster 931 BF. After seeing both at real in the shop,I bought the HP w22 because of the wide screen. Since I don’t have a TV set, it’s a good substituin. Also I hope that a HP display has a good quality and survive more than 3 or 4 years.

I use it with Debian etch together with the proprietary nvidia kernel drivers. The modeline in the xorg.conf is:

# V-freq: 60.00 Hz // h-freq: 65.35 KHz
Modeline “1680×1050” 149.00 1680 1760 1944 2280 1050 1050 1052 1089

After some days of usage I’m very pleased with the HP w22.

P.S.: I bought it for 350 Euros at MediaMarkt

Hi,

You might not remember who the release team is, but we still want to

schedule did not work out due to problems with the kernel and the
slower than expected reduction of release critical bugs.

“Also sprach Zarathustra – Friedrich Nietzsche”

March 6, 2007

Thanks to Lorena for lending me this book!

Title: Also sprach Zarathustra
Author; Friedrich Nietzsche
ISBNR: 3-442-12252-X

I have to admit that i didn’t understand the half, not even a fourth of the book. It’s a fictional report about the life of Zarathustra. A philosopher who develops his own theories. The purpose of this book is to explain the thinking of Nietzsche himself.
Altough it was hard to read and it is old fashioned (especially in the view of women) it was interesting to read. The “Übermensch” is mentioned in the book and he is explained.
I my (VERY humble opinion) Nietzsche was unsatisfied with the society in his time and was searching a way out.

X out of 10 mind bending theories.

X because i can’t rate it, because I have not enough expertise on the field of philosophy *g*
