Build a generic typesafe DAO with Hibernate and Spring AOP

October 31, 2007

On IBM developerworks I found an interesting article about how to create a type safe data acess object implementation which is generic too.

With the adoption of Java™ 5 generics, the idea of a generic typesafe Data Access Object (DAO) implementation has become feasible. In this article, system architect Per Mellqvist presents a generic DAO implementation class based on Hibernate. He then shows you how to use Spring AOP introductions to add a typesafe interface to the class for query execution.

Cookie crumble contest

October 27, 2007

The cyber-law department of the Harvard university decided to start a youtube video contest about cookies (the HTTP browser ones).

Why are they doing this?

Most people know cookies as a treat best enjoyed with milk. When it comes to web cookies, however, many users want to know more:

  • What is a cookie?
  • How do cookies work?
  • How can cookies be used?
  • How is the data from cookies used with data collected in other ways, including from third parties?
  • How can cookies be misused?
  • What options does a user have to manage cookies and their use?

We want them to know more too, and we don’t think they’ll learn it from disclosure statements in 8-point type or IN ALL-CAPS. We want to foster easy-to-understand explanations and critical discussion.

At this time there are 23 videos trying to explain what cookies are, what benefit there are and where the danger lies.
I will show you my favorites distributed over future postings.. But here the first

A telephone call with the “Bundeskanzleramt” Austria

October 25, 2007

Today I called the “Bundeskanzleramt (BKA)” of Austria (telephon number is 0800 222 666).
I called them because I wanted to know why an organization like the “Österreichisches Normungsinstitut (ON)” can be such instransparent (see former posting).

I explained the man on the other line my problem with the ON and why I was calling them. (The ON told me that someone from the BKA was sitting in the board deciding to vote for “yes with comments” on the ISO OOXML fast track ballot).

He seemed to understand to my problem and assured me that he was going to inform himself about the ON and who was in this board and promised me to call back.

Update:
After half an hour he called me back and told me that he has talked with the ON himself. The person he talked with him, couldn’t tell him which rights I have to get
insights into the board. But he suggested that I should call the legal department on the ON to get informed.

Conclusion:
He was quite polite and helpful. Now I have some more numbers to call…

History of this “story” (oldest posting first):
Say “NO” to OOXML
OOXML defeated… for this time…
