Using AOP in the Enterprise

February 29, 2008

InfoQ.com has a video of a talk about the possible usage of AOP in enterprise applications.

Adrian Colyer discusses where Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) should be used, practical applications of AOP in enterprise situations such as Hibernate exception translation and automatic operation retry on nonfatal exceptions, and AOP mechanisms in Spring 2.5.

I think watching this one hour presentation of spring aop with the small examples enhances the understanding of this technology.

Sharing Creative Works

February 28, 2008

A PDF of Sharing Creative Works, the latest CC comic book, is now available for download. This new format is easier to read and share than the wiki version we published a couple months ago, and is ready to print. Sharing Creative Works is a colorful, easy-to-understand introduction to some of the abstract concepts behind Creative Commons.

Sharing Creative Works pngMaybe someone can convert this series of pictures and text into a slideshow and publish it in youtube/google video/… ? Another idea would be to take only the pictures and enrich the slide show with the text spoken in english/german/…

Anybody who know how to do this?!

Is Microsoft Office Adware?

February 25, 2008

An interesting article about adware and microsoft office can be found on the openOffice.org Ninja Blog.

Is Microsoft Office adware? Wikipedia defines adware as “any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used.”

In Microsoft Office Professional 2003’s help, a search for “APA” (a popular documentation style) brings up two links labeled Microsoft Office Marketplace.

He has more examples showing that microsoft uses the office help for advertising products…

How do you deal with climate change?

February 22, 2008

I often discuss about climate change with people. Sometimes it is hard because I’m no scientist and scientific facts about how the world CAN’T be changed this massive by humans is given a lot.
And there is one thing which is true, nobody can be SURE of anything.

Not the skeptics, not me and no single person on this world. Which lead me to the argument what harm can be done if you are a skeptic and climate change happens or the other way round, if you are an activist like me and the climate change doesn’t happen.

For me, taking the risk of economic stagnation is much easier to take than the risk of creating social, economic, environmental, … disasters.
Happily I found that there are other people with this arguments.. Even one who created a bunch of videos explaining the arguments….
If you have 10 minutes.. watch it.. it explains the matter much better than I can do..

Bruce Perens: A New Decade For Open Source

February 19, 2008

Bruce Perens wrote an article about the last decade of Open Source and what the next decade will bring for Open Source.

… And that brings me to our first mistake: for a time, there was a conflict between Open Source and Free Software evangelism. My intent has always been for Open Source to simply be another way of talking about Free Software, tailored to the ears of business people, and that it would eventually lead them to a greater appreciation of Richard Stallman’s arguments.
This has come to pass, and I hope you’ll continue to make it so. One only had to witness the attendance of the GPL 3 committees to see that the importance of FSF’s work was appreciated by the largest of corporations.

… So, you can see that the future will present its challenges for Open Source. We could never have forecast how big we would become during Decade Zero of Open Source. But we’ve built tremendous strength, to the point that we can consider much larger tasks. Join us now, as we enter Decade One. …
